Years ago, I had a computer in college. The pc was one of those massive, bulky computers with the rear that protruded so a lot of so that you could barely work it on your desk. One day, I left class and headed back to my apartment for a little whereas. I was in an exceedingly rush to induce back because the weather forecaster had said that we tend to were in for some bad weather; and in the state of North Carolina, that could literally mean anything. While in my apartment, I went into my room, switched on my computer and went out to grab one thing from the kitchen. I could hear the rain pelting against the windows, and when I glanced over at the patio, I saw white specks of hail littering the ground, bouncing off of the sliding door. Already petrified of thunderstorms, I was already anxious, but I determined to try not to consider it. Then as I reentered my room, I saw a giant flash of lightning, which felt as though it absolutely was right outside of my window. Less than a split second later, I heard a giant popping, hissing, fizzling sound and saw a huge spark emit from my computer. To this day, I even have never jumped back so quick, to the purpose where I nearly fell over. Seconds later, I heard a loud crash of thunder. From my pc (which had been turned on), I saw smoke coming from the back- not enough to be alarmed...however enough to be alarmed. I ran and got the fire extinguisher, however I did not finish up needing it. Once I did a fast once-over and inspected my computer, I determined that there was no fire. I tried to toggle the mouse, however it had been obvious that the pc was off, thus I tried to turn the pc back on. No success. My pc was fried. Later, when I brought my computer into the shop to own it fastened, the tech inspected it and told me that the 'motherboard' had been broken beyond repair. Apparently, my laptop had been struck and killed by lightning. I would wish an entirely new laptop. He took my computer apart to point out me the part of the pc that had been broken. He would possibly have well been showing me one thing from the moon because to the present day, I admit that I simply nodded my head and pretended to grasp what he was talking concerning; and i was eternally grateful that there have been folks in the planet who had the type of knowledge that he had to even be in a position to provide me that sort of diagnosis. If I learned something from that experience, it's to flip off and unplug any electrical appliances when the weather is dangerous outside. In that particular instance, Raleigh was experiencing severe weather; and despite the very fact that my computer was 'safely' plugged into an influence strip, it most likely would have been wise to turn off and/or unplug the ability chord and leave my pc off whereas the storm was raging outside. I made a mental note then and there to top off on magazines, flashlights, batters and extra reading material. Looking back, it's a little bizarre and surreal to suppose that that incident befell just ten years ago; and it is incredible to see how abundant a lot of advanced things are these days with regards to technology. Now, we tend to have iPads, iPhones, Kindles and other geeky devices to stay us occupied. It nearly makes me surprise what the globe would do if we were to expertise a real electrical emergency where nothing could be turned on for several days or perhaps weeks.
