The cylinder block has four scavenge pumps and the engine oil pressure pump features variable displacement geometry which contribute in reducing the amount of power absorbed at high revs. Lowering the pump's displacement increases the power available in the crankshaft for the same amount of fuel used.

The 458 Italia Spider is equipped with a direct injected 4.5-liter V8 engine delivering 562 hp and 398 ft. lb. of torque. It has a Bosch sourced Formula 1 Trac traction control system. The transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch unit with shift paddles on the steering wheel. The result is super fast shifting with the engine on its full boil.

Although the 458 was announced as a replacement for the outgoing F430 model, it was actually based on an entirely different design that was driven by Ferrari's learning experiences from Formula 1 rather than the F430. The 458 was designed by Pininfarina. There have been unconfirmed reports that the inspiration for the design was drawn from the Ferrari Enzo and was designed to be Ferrari's best V8 car, significantly distinguishing itself from the current Ferrari California model. Although it would be hard to notice, the design was actually driven heavily by the aerodynamic capabilities and efficiencies.

Another reason the F40 was so aerodynamic was the body design that had panels made from aluminum, carbon fiber, and Kevlar. Because of the makeup of the body it had very low weight and was very strong. To also lessen the weigh the windshield was made up of plastic, as were the windows. In production there was no instillation of carpets, door handles, or sound systems. The early production of the F40, pre-1990, also had no catalytic converter but this was changed when it was a requirement for the control of emissions.

With the top up, the car appearance is sleek, long, and it looks ready to run. Furthermore, the curves of the front and rear fenders are readily apparent. When the top is down, however, the car's overall look is a bit more relaxed and the two raised back buttresses are more apparent. The raised buttresses actually protect the driver and passenger's heads in the event of the car's rollover.

While each car is built with unique care at the FerrariFactory in Maranello, Italy, which now doubles as a tourist attraction and a kind of museum, it is perhaps more appropriate to say that what Ferrari does is a craft, that their engineers and designers are artisans, and that each car is a work of art in its own right.

The aerodynamics of a car that goes that fast needs to be very well thought out. Where other racecars for the road have a wing or "spoiler" in back, Ferrari 458 Italia designs down draft into the body of the car.

You can't mention Ferrari without paying attention to their current flagship in the two-seater class, the 599 GTB Fiorano. Available since 2006, the Fiorano's sleek lines pay homage to some of their most classic vehicles, it's no wonder that Ferrari plans to release a GTO version which will be shown off at the Beijing Motor Show in April of this year.
